“Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.”

~Moshe Feldenkrais

teleceptor | medical definition

teleceptor: [ tel´ĕ-sep″tor ] a sensory nerve terminal sensitive to stimuli originating at a distance.
These nerve endings exist in the eyes and ears and organize the musculature of the neck.

"Without limitation, the neck should turn with a smoothness unequaled by the most perfect man-made mechanism." ~Moshé Feldenkrais

The head, where all the teleceptors are located - eyes, ears, nostrils, and mouth - turns right and left with almost every movement, attending to changes in the space around us. Of all the teleceptors, when the eyes move in the direction of the head’s rotation, the reflected turning of the head over the neck should be gliding and easy. By working with the teleceptors in a mindful way that ignites a renewal of the lost sensitivity of childhood, you, too, can regain mobility and a sense that the head is as if floating over the top of the spine. This is one of the best ways to improve function after even a series of whiplash injuries.

I should know - by the time I was seven years into my private practice as a massage therapist, I knew I had to do something. The tension of all the physical lifting and pushing required when doing massage and the sheer stress of being around people wanting someone to "fix" their stress left me feeling tense and stiff. This is what drove me to try Feldenkrais, which seemed vague and mysterious. Yet, after the three major car accidents, unable to massage myself, I needed a DIY way to relieve the pain.

I came. I learned. And now I can do things no other person living with multiple concussions and whiplash can. These were serious car accidents: two of them over 60 mph. Yet, I can ski. I can ride horses. I can dance and I can live a life that never would have been possible if I had not completely committed myself to understanding how to do ATM. It's amazing work and all something easy to learn, something you can do from home if you prefer. I record every class I teach and the recordings are included with the lesson.

However, I always love live classes more, because you get more feedback. It's more of a surprise because you don't always know where the lesson is going. And it is great to be able to ask questions and discuss the method beforehand with others present who are also experiencing this very freeing form of self-inquiry.

Topic - Freedom in the Jaw and Neck
Movement Theme - Organization of the teleceptors allows for better function in the neck and jaw.
Somatic Repercussions - The muscles of the eyes directly influence the tension - or release of tension - in the neck. Add to that the fact that the jaw and neck muscles attach in close proximity and when you release one, you release the other. Check out a baby next time you are near one. Isn't it amazing how far she can turn her neck?

Continuing Education CEU's available for massage license renewal in Oregon - must be present at all four classes.
